What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral commonly used within buildings. It is reported that up to 50% of homes in the UK were built using asbestos containing materials (ACMs).


Asbestos was widely used due to it's heat resistant qualities and soon became commonly used in buildings.


Asbestos in only dangerous when airborne. When inhaled ACMs are extremely hazardous. Asbestos exposure has been linked as a cause of Mesothelioma and lung cancer. 

Who is responsible for asbestos if found in a building?

Those responsible for maintenance and repair of asbestos are building owners, landlords, housing associations, and building managers etc.


They have a duty of care in accordance with the HSE Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012).

A tradesman has disturbed what I believe to be asbestos, what should I do?

If you believe that asbestos has been disturbed within your premises you should stop all work immediately. SAS Ltd recommends a Reassurance Air Test is carried out in the effected area and a Bulk Sample of the suspected ACM.
